Washington, DC – President Donald Trump nothing if not an expert at dealing with the media. From providing sensationalized sound bites to stirring up the Democrats and distracting them from issues they would otherwise resists, President Trump has been taking the opportunity of the Democrats and their lack of focus and leadership to quietly repeal and destroy the abomination that is Obamacare – that much hated healthcare legislation left behind by the Obama administration – and the Democrats are none the wiser.
Despite the paralysis of Congress, the Trump administration has been undertaking the task of dismantling Obamacare away from the media spotlight, with new proposals that would allow many healthy Americans to drop their Obamacare coverage and relieve them of federally mandated and oppressive healthcare costs.
The Trump administration intends to expand and deregulate association health plans, a welcome move. Under current law, such plans, sold to trade and professional associations, must cover “essential health benefits” such as hospitalization, maternity care and prescription drugs. President Trump intends to increase enrollment in these plans and end the restriction on benefits, which rewards millions of hardworking Americans who are members of these trade and professional associations. As long as you’re contributing and working to build the country, there’s no reason you should be denied healthcare. The move would also allow insurers to create affordable plans providing sufficient coverage to people who expect no big healthcare expenses, because why should the strong and healthy be overpaying for healthcare when they take care of themselves so well? Why should they be punished for the poor lifestyle choices of others?
The Trump administration also intends to extend the duration of unregulated short-term policies to grow from three months to as long as a year, allowing healthy people to pay smaller premiums for the insurance that they actually need, instead of overpaying for insurance that they will never use.
President Trump is singlehandedly dismantling all the iniquities that were so synonymous with Obamacare, including ensuring the end of the “individual mandate” in 2019 as part of the changes that Congress enacted in the tax bill, which will finally end the penalties that Obama instituted for people going without healthcare insurance. Ultimately, insurance is all about choice and Obamacare was fundamentally unAmerican because it robbed Americans of making that choice. The nanny state should have no part to play in the lives of Americans. Americans should be able to decide for themselves what healthcare they require and what insurance, if any, they need, but it should not be for the federal government to force Americans to overpay for insurance that they don’t need and can ill afford – President Trump is ensuring that.
