If We’re Going to Ban Guns, Then Let’s Ban Knives as Well

Washington, DC – As tragic as the high school shooting in Florida is, this is not the time for another mass shooting to be hijacked by the anti-gun lobby or by liberals. The Parkland school shooting was the action of one mentally disturbed individual. Everyday across this great nation, millions of rounds are discharged from millions of weapons, safely, professionally and in the discharge of those freedoms which we hold dear. In much the same way, millions of knives are used in kitchens everywhere across this land, safely, securely and professionally to prepare millions of meals to feed the freedom of this country.

So when another mass shooting results in liberals and the anti-gun lobby calling out for a ban on guns once again, it’s important to separate the fact from the fiction.

In 2016, the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) showed that more than four times as many people were stabbed to death than were killed with rifles of any kind. And because the UCR category of rifles covers every type of rifle, this means there would be an even greater divide between the number of people stabbed to death versus those shot to death with an AR-15 or similar rifle.

According to FBI: UCR Table 12, there were approximately 374 people shot and killed with rifles of any kind, but there were 1,604 people or over four time as many people killed with “knives or cutting instruments.” So should we ban knives as well. For that matter, why stop at knives? Why not broaden that ban to include tall buildings, pills of any kind and motor vehicles as well. Heck, while we’re at it, let’s also ban pillows, rope, hammers and carbon monoxide. Just to be safe, let’s also ban bleach, rat poison and fertilizer. Where does the insanity stop?

Liberals will argue that rifles are different from any of the implements listed above, because of their ability to cause mass casualty scenarios – that is until someone decides to poison an entire school cafeteria full of school children by poisoning the school’s food.

This is not to diminish the deaths of those who did die via a rifle, especially the innocent victims at Parkland. But it does show that the liberal’s relentless focus on banning “assault weapons” is a focus on something that is not used for homicide with anywhere near the frequency of knives and if brought to its logical conclusion ends in absurdity.
